7 Ways Yoga Builds a Positive Body Image for Women

Today’s guest post is by Cindy Prosser.

Studies have shown that yoga is not only a great way to strengthen your mind and tone your muscles – it also helps women have a more positive body image. In turn, it can help prevent depression and eating disorders. Why is yoga such a powerful solution? Read on to find out…

1) Yoga teaches mindfulness – One of the huge benefits of yoga is that it teaches you how to be aware of what’s in the moment. Think about the present and don’t let others’ attitudes effect you. Often times, it’s too easy to dwell on others’ opinions and let those opinions influence you in every day life. Yoga helps you rid your mind of the attitude that only thin and beautiful women will find happiness.

2) Yoga teaches breathing techniques – What’s breathing have to do with a positive self-image? Well, the breathing techniques taught in yoga can be very useful when dealing with stress and any negative thoughts that enter the mind. Next time you have one of these negative thoughts, breathe in and out, count to 10, and remind yourself of the good stuff.

3) Yoga improves your attitude – Studies have shown that women who practice yoga regularly have healthier attitudes about life and their bodies – even more so than what comes from other exercises like running, biking, and exercise classes. Forget having a runner’s high – turn to yoga instead!

4) Yoga tunes you into your body – Since every practice focuses so much on breathing and the flow of your body moving through the poses, it helps emphasize how truly amazing the body is. In the end, it makes you more aware of every part of your body as you learn to appreciate it for what it is.

5) Yoga helps energize – Aside from improving posture and strengthening your muscles, yoga also helps increase your body’s energy. It’s an all-in-one solution for your physical and emotional health. Once you do it, you’ll feel energized and ready to conquer anything.

6) Yoga helps you see the world differently – There’s something about the practice of yoga that makes you see things differently – and just view the world through different glasses. Yoga teaches that one of the greatest gifts in life is having a strong body and having the ability to just be in the moment. All frustration and sense of competition melts away so all you focus on just being a healthy version of you.

7) Yoga is a full body solution – Regular practice makes you feel so good about yourself that it just makes you want to eat right and take care of your body. Studies have shown that having this attitude has greatly decreased the chance of developing an eating disorder and trying out the latest “fad” diet.

And there you have it, my friends. Yoga can be a fantastic way to strengthen your mind and body – and make you feel great about yourself every single day.
